IWV Supports Gas Furnace Rule Disapproval Resolutions

Independent Women continues to push back against the U.S. Department of Energy’s net-zero energy agenda attempts to regulate household appliances in nearly every room of your home. The Department’s latest victim is gas furnaces. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach (R-MN), and Congressman Pat Fallon (R-TX)—with support of over 25 Members of Congress—have introduced a disapproval resolution under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) that would block the Department of Energy’s finalized gas furnace rule. See Independent Women’s Voice’s letter of support below. You too can take action through Independent Women’s Network’s Tell The Biden Administration To Get Out Of Your Home! Action Center.

February 5, 2024

Dear Members of Congress,

On behalf of Independent Women’s Voice, I strongly encourage the passage of bicameral disapproval resolutions, SJR 58 and HJR 111, of the Department of Energy’s “Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Consumer Furnaces” under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), introduced by Representative Michelle Fischbach (R) of Minnesota and Senator Ted Cruz (R) of Texas. Independent Women’s Voice fights for women and their loved ones by effectively expanding support for policy solutions that aren’t just well-intended, but actually enhance people’s freedom, opportunities, and well-being.

This resolution would repeal the Department of Energy’s finalized rule on Energy Conservation Standards for Consumer Furnaces set to be finalized on February 16th, 2024, and enacted in 2028. The rule would mandate phasing out non-condensing gas furnaces for condensing ones to achieve an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 95%. Under the new rule, consumers would have to replace their existing furnace with new models that exhaust gas out of homes to fulfill this AFUE requirement.

Consumer gas furnaces are quite popular with Americans. These appliances account for 19% of annual residential energy use in the U.S. This new standard, however, would make non-condensing furnaces more cost prohibitive and result in less consumer choice–with 60% of non-condensing gas furnaces expected to be eliminated from the market. Americans will see costs rise approximately $500 and should anticipate paying $2,200 to install condensing models. These changes would adversely affect a third of U.S. households. DOE’s own data shows 30% of senior-only households, 26% of low-income households, and 27% of small business consumers would be impacted by this policy change.

The gas furnace rule is part of the Biden administration’s continued war on commonly-owned, reliable household appliances. These rules claim to be energy efficient, but are hardly economically sustainable. According to one estimate from the Alliance for Consumers, Americans will pay an additional $9,000 on average to achieve compliance with these many new mandates.

These resolutions would be a course correction for obtuse Department of Energy rulemaking that prioritizes impractical, infeasible net-zero decarbonization goals over energy efficiency and affordability and quality of life for consumers.

For all these reasons, we urge members of Congress to work toward the swift passage of the SJR 58 and HJR 111. IWV thanks Representative Fischback and Senator Cruz for their leadership on this issue.

Respectfully,

Gabriella Hoffman

Director, Center for Energy and Conservation

Working for Women Report

We know women care about flexibility. While the left promotes the idea that women are a monolith who all want the same thing in life, we know women don’t always have the same opinions. And when it comes to working outside the home, flexibility is the top priority for millions of women. The problem is, rising costs on everything from housing to food means financial security and affordability trumps their own personal considerations—like wanting to have more time with family. In other words: this economy is making it hard for women to make the choices that are best for them!

The bottom line: Women are struggling to make ends meet and want to know that there are plenty of job opportunities out there to meet their goals and want policy proposals that will maximize flexibility and create diverse work opportunities.

If you want to learn more about this topic, check out the third edition of the “Working for Women” report which advances solutions that place women—not government—in the driver’s seat to build the lives that they want for themselves and their families.

Arizona National School Choice Rally

Over 250 Arizonians gathered at the state capital today to send Governor Katie Hobbs a message: school choice isn’t going anywhere. Arizona is the model state for school choice, with over 73,000 kids using the program successfully. Governor Hobbs is actively seeking to displace these 73,000 students, because she believes educators know what is best for kids, not their parents.

The IWN Phoenix, AZ Chapter joined the rally, sponsored by AZ Senator Jake Hoffman, to stand with families. Christy Narsi, Phoenix Chapter Chair said: “It is INJUSTICE to force our minority students into failing schools. It is INJUSTICE to force single moms to put their kids in schools that make every day harder, not better. This is why I fight for school choice and the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program. Families should be fighting for parental inclusion in education. Instead, Governor Hobbs wants to exclude parents from being able to educate their children the way they see fit”

“Opponents of the Empowerment Scholarship Account program and of school choice insist the public schools will lose money and start failing because of the program. Of course we know that’s not true, but let’s call a spade a spade. They are already failing. Over half of Arizona’s budget is going to K-12 education, yet Arizona ranks nearly dead last in the nation! Arizonian parents are educated enough to know that money is NOT the problem. It is our job to insist the money start showing up in our kids’ grades and in their self-confidence. We cast our vote through school choice by enrolling our kids in performing schools.”

Stacy Brown, IWN Phoenix, AZ Chapter Chair for Education Freedom and Vice President of Education for All AZ, said: “As school choice week kicks off, we celebrate here in Arizona at the Capitol with a rally. It was an incredible opportunity to gather together with legislators and other parents who have made it possible for our children to grow!”

Bella Ceballos-Viner emceed the rally. Bella is Founder and Executive Director of Padres Unidos AZ. Bella said: “Today was a good day to send the message that Latinos and African Americans are joining the fight for school choice. That school choice holds no racial boundaries.”
