On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Independent Women’s Network (IWN) Chapter Members from Phoenix and Chandler joined forces with Jennifer Braceras, IW’s vice president of Legal Affairs and founder of Independent Women’s Law Center, to demonstrate their unwavering support for SB6128, Arizona Senator Sine Kerr’s Women’s Bill of Rights. This groundbreaking bill aims to define common sex-based terms, safeguard women’s spaces and opportunities, and ensure the accuracy of state data collection.
The bill successfully passed out of committee, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming law. The next crucial step will be for SB6128 to move to the Senate floor, followed by consideration in the House.
IWN Chapters, which strive to inspire, interact, influence, and impact, provide a platform for like-minded individuals to forge lasting bonds and engage in informed, open, and civil debate and dialogue. Together, they work towards advancing shared principles while enjoying the camaraderie and support of a community. These chapters actively address the most pressing issues affecting their lives, communities, and the nation as a whole.
Braceras emphasized the importance of defining sex in order to effectively combat sex discrimination. She stated, “We can’t discuss how to prevent sex discrimination if we can’t define sex.”
Christy Narsi, national chapter director of Independent Women’s Network, expressed the solidarity of Arizonan women in protecting their rights and refusing to be marginalized. She passionately declared, “We have a strong community of Arizonan women who are ready to fight to protect our rights and unapologetically refuse to allow us to be erased. We stand in support of SB1628, a critical bill that allows our state the right to create separate spaces for males and females without the threat of judges and bureaucrats challenging the definition of a woman.”
Sheri Lopez, an Arizona chapter member, shared a personal anecdote highlighting the importance of embracing individuality and rejecting societal pressures. She recounted, “When I was a young child, my mom would put me in a dress and then find me in a tree hanging from the branches or playing in a puddle of mud. If people today saw a child doing the same things that I did, they would be told that they were really meant to be a boy and born in the wrong body.”
Bella Ceballos-Viner, another Arizona chapter member, emphasized the sacredness of womanhood and the unity among women in supporting SB1628. She asserted, “Being a woman is a gift from God. Our existence is non-negotiable, and the women of Arizona stand together in support of SB1628 because SB1628 supports us.”
